Part 1: Statutory Benefits

Germany has one of the most comprehensive mandatory social protection systems in the world. As your employer, Toku is required by law to enroll you in and contribute to all of the following programs. You don't need to take any action - these are active from your first day of employment.

Health Insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung / GKV)

Germany's statutory health insurance system provides broad coverage for medical care, including GP and specialist visits, hospital treatment, prescribed medications, and more.

How it works:

  • Your contribution is approximately 7.3% of your gross salary, matched by Toku as your employer
  • An additional small premium (typically ~0.8 - 1.6%) is set by your individual health fund
  • Contributions are deducted automatically from your monthly payslip Choosing your health fund:

You have the freedom to choose your own statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse). Some of the most popular options include:

Provider Notes
Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) Most popular; strong digital services
Barmer One of Germany's oldest and largest funds
DAK-Gesundheit Large nationwide fund
AOK Regional funds (e.g., AOK Bayern, AOK Plus)

You'll need to provide your Krankenkasse details when you're onboarded so that contributions can be correctly directed.

Private health insurance (PKV): If you have private health insurance instead of statutory insurance, please provide your policy document and monthly contribution amount during onboarding.

Pension Insurance (Rentenversicherung)

Germany's statutory pension system provides retirement income, as well as disability and survivor's benefits.

  • Your contribution is approximately 9.3% of your gross salary, matched by Toku
  • Contributions are deducted automatically from your monthly payslip
  • Your contributions build your entitlement to a state pension upon retirement

Unemployment Insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung)

Statutory unemployment insurance provides income support if you become unemployed.

  • Your contribution is approximately 1.3% of your gross salary, matched by Toku
  • Contributions are deducted automatically from your monthly payslip

Long-Term Care Insurance (Pflegeversicherung)

Long-term care insurance covers nursing and care costs if you need ongoing support due to illness, disability, or age.

  • Your contribution is approximately 1.7% of your gross salary, matched by Toku
  • Contributions are deducted automatically from your monthly payslip

Statutory Accident Insurance (Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung / VBG)

Germany requires all employers to provide statutory accident insurance for every employee. Toku covers this entirely at no cost to you — nothing is deducted from your salary.

What it covers:

  • Accidents that happen at work
  • Accidents during your commute to and from work
  • Occupational diseases related to your work
  • Rehabilitation and return-to-work support if you're injured You don't need to do anything - coverage is automatic from your first day of employment. If you ever experience a workplace or commuting accident, notify Toku as soon as possible so a claim can be filed on your behalf.

Part 2: Supplemental Health Insurance - Hallesche FEELfree

In addition to your statutory health coverage, Toku provides a supplemental health insurance benefit through Hallesche Krankenversicherung. This coverage is designed to complement your statutory or private health insurance by giving you a flexible annual health budget for a wide range of additional healthcare services that aren't always fully covered by your standard plan.

This benefit is provided by Toku at no cost to you.
